The week long celebrations in the run up to the main event – the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta from 29-31 August – kick off on Saturday 24 August with the Royal Regatta Tennis Tournament, the Swimming Gala, as well as a feast of rowing and sailing events including the South West Rowing Championships. New for this year is the Regatta Family Funday in the Royal Avenue Gardens. Replacing the ‘traditional fete’, it will be packed full of exciting family friendly activities including a circus skills workshop with balloon modelling, children’s treasure trail and face painting and pebble painting craft activities supported by Devon Rocks and Stones, as well as the usual ever popular Morris dancers and dog show to find out who is Dartmouth’s top dog.
Organised by the Royal Dart Yacht Club, Dartmouth Yacht Club and Dittisham Sailing Club, the sailing events thing place over eight days, will culminate over the weekend. You won’t miss the Illuminated Boat Procession held after dark on Friday and the Classic Craft review and steamboat rally on Saturday afternoon. The dinghy racing for the junior sailors takes place on the lower reaches of the Dart whereas the seniors will race between Dittisham and Galmpton. The yachting events – of which there are over 50 – take place in Start Bay with an anticipated 250 boats, ranging from older classics to high-end racing machines providing for some very exciting and competitive racing.
In addition to the rowing and sailing there are a number of other well-established sporting events of the less watery variety. The Regatta Road Race, run over a testing five-mile course, is complemented by less competitive fun runs for children and young adults. Other more sedentary sports events include a one-day golf tournament at the Dartmouth Golf and Deodora Club with competitions for both men and ladies, the Regatta Bowling Competition and an evening Darts tournament held at the Conservative Club in Dartmouth over two evenings.
The Saturday night firework displays, guaranteed to leave lasting memories of the 175th Dartmouth Royal Regatta, always provides a spectacular finale.
Events will take place between 24 August and 31 August.
